100m Cash Reward: Parliament Refutes Claims, Asks For Evidence

Parliament has distanced itself from reports alleging that a group of legislators received a shs.100M cash reward each. Government Chief Whip Hamson Denis Obua stated that Members of Parliament are paid promptly in line with formal procedure, seeking evidence on the claims.

It is alleged that the cash gift was given to the lawmakers as a reward for passing the controversial Coffee Bill while also preparing grounds for the pending UPDF amendment bill.

Yesterday, April 8, media platforms were awash with reports claiming that a section of Members of Parliament from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and some opposition received shs.100M each.

It is alleged that the money was given to the lawmakers as a token of appreciation for passing the controversial Coffee Bill while also preparing grounds for the pending UPDF amendment bill. Speaking to some MPs today, they said they have not seen any money.

Raising his concerns in the capacity of acting Leader of Opposition during plenary, Butambala legislator Muwanga Kivumbi sought an explanation from parliament heads on the claims.

Responding to his concerns, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa said he would not comment on ‘street talk,’ discouraging members from soiling Parliament’s name and image.

The Government Chief Whip, Hamson Denis Obua, stressed that parliament payments to MPs are made through statutory process, seeking evidence for the claims.

The 100M cash gift allegations come as Parliament had recently approved the over Shs.4 trillion supplementary budget last month, hence creating suspicion that this budget could be the source of the claimed reward.
