Government Drafts National Agroecology Strategy Plan
Ramson
The government has moved to draft a strategic plan for the implementation of agro-ecology across the country
The strategy is set to bring together stakeholders in agroecology to streamline production in the sector. Agroecology is a technique of sustainable farming that focuses on utilizing natural resources comprehensively without letting them be susceptible to damage.
Agroecology entails sustainable methods of production, processing and marketing of food, environmentally friendliness, health and people focus. With continued climate change across the globe, calls have been made to see the growth of agroecology with a focus on climate-resilient practices.
Here in Uganda, not many farmers have appreciated agroecology and those that have done it mostly at an individual level
This explains why the government has moved to formulate a strategic plan to streamline the sector bringing together all stakeholders as well as implementing guidelines to ensure the growth of the sector.
By this time, farmers especially organic ones are expected to have had their farms certified.
Sir Bob George, a senior agricultural officer in the Ministry of Agriculture says there are standards that have been put in place for organic farmers to follow and firms have been approved to ensure these organic farmers keep the standards
Among the considerations are the process of the value chain and, the use of chemicals among others.
This certification is said to be critical in market access, especially at the national and global levels.
Farmers have however been warmed against lowering the standards after certification. Sir Bob George says there’s continued assessment of the goods at each level of production to ensure the safety of food to humans.
This comes ahead of the agroecology week of action 2023. Stakeholders in the sector have advocated for the scale-up of agroecology to ensure the production of safe food despite factors like climate change.
Agro-Ecology Week is set to bring together stakeholders in the sector to forge a way forward on how the sector can be streamlined and improved.
