Kampala City Festival Marks a Historic Return After 8-Year Hiatus

After an eight-year pause, the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) officially relaunched the Kampala City Festival — a vibrant celebration of culture, creativity, and community spirit. The 2025 edition promises to be the biggest yet, with activities commencing in all city divisions leading up to the grand finale.

The festival’s official launch took place at KCCA headquarters in Kampala, overseen by Executive Director Sharifa Buzeki. She announced that the festival, which had been on hold since 2017 due to disruptions caused by COVID-19, is now making a strong comeback to foster community connections and economic growth.

Highlighting the festival’s significance, State Minister for Kampala, Hon. Kyofatogabye Kabuye, emphasized its role in promoting culture and unity across the city. "This festival is about bringing joy, celebrating our culture, and strengthening the bonds within our community," he said.

In the lead-up to October 5th at Kololo Independence Grounds, a series of activities will roll out across various city divisions. These include health drives, community clean-ups, and cultural showcases, all aimed at building momentum for the main event.

Owek. Robert Sserwanga, Buganda Kingdom Minister for Youth and Sports, stressed the importance of collective responsibility in fostering happiness and unity, stating, "Happiness is medicine, and this festival is about every citizen taking responsibility for joy, culture, and community."

Support from partners remains strong, with representatives from the Halal Islamic Chamber of Commerce and KCCA Council pledging collaboration to restore public trust and enhance citywide engagement.

Sheila Birunji, Chairperson of the Kampala City Festival, assured that all stakeholders are aligned, and preparations are on track for an unforgettable celebration.

The festival’s revival signifies a new chapter for Kampala, blending cultural pride with community-driven initiatives that aim to rejuvenate the city both economically and socially.
