Bail Applications Are Formularized -ULS

The release of jailed lawyer Eron Kiiza on a cash bail of 20 million shillings, after presenting substantial sureties to ensure his return to court and prosecution of his appeal, has raised concerns among the public regarding the administration of justice.

During a media briefing, the Uganda Law Society expressed opposition to the amount requested for his release, stating that such a high bail amount limits access to justice for Ugandans. The Uganda Law Society is on the horns of a dilemma as they analyze Eron Kiiza's case of a bail application.

This follows the recent approval by the High Court in Kampala that granted human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza a cash bail of 20 million shillings.

This came after an appeal against his earlier conviction for contempt of court by the General Court Martial. Eron Kiiza, a prominent advocate for civil liberties, was arrested and convicted for contempt of court on January 7th and sentenced to nine months in prison

In his address, Mbazira Christopher an LLM in Human Rights from the University of Pretoria and legal practitioner, stated that lawyer Eron’s case justice was delayed and disregards of humans rights were disregarded.

Advocate in high court Amos Kuku celebrated the ruling in his speech. He furthermore elaborated on the issue of bail, which limited most of the Ugandans in accessing justice in high court.
