Besigye Trial Intensifies as State Grilled Over Secret Witnesses: Defence Demands Proof of Alleged Threats In Treason Case. Court Allows Tough Cross-Examination Amid Rising Tensions
The trial of opposition figure Kizza Besigye and colleague Hajji Obedi Lutale has taken a dramatic turn, with state prosecutors coming under intense pressure in court over attempts to conceal key witnesses, as the defense demands evidence of alleged threats.
Proceedings resumed with Dr. Besigye appearing alongside co-accused Obeid Lutale, as the court heard arguments surrounding the prosecution’s request to keep some witnesses anonymous.
Chief State Attorney Joseph Kyomuhendo faced sustained cross-examination from defense lawyers, who questioned the basis of claims that certain witnesses faced electronic threats.
Appearing for the second time on the stand, Kyomuhendo was pressed to provide concrete evidence to support the allegations but struggled to offer specific details, declining to disclose sources, drawing sharp criticism from the defense.
Lead defense counsel Erias Lukwago challenged the prosecution to clarify the nature, origin, and handling of the alleged threats, insisting on transparency in a case of such magnitude.
The exchange intensified as Lukwago demanded details about a forensic expert reportedly linked to identifying one Frank Kiherere, named in the state affidavit as a conduit of the alleged threats.
Prosecution, led by Chief State Attorney Richard Birivumbuka, objected to the line of questioning, accusing the defense of intimidation.
However, presiding judge Emmanuel Baguma allowed the cross-examination to proceed, noting that the court would determine whether the questions were repetitive or justified.
The dispute stems from a prosecution request to conceal the identities of six out of ten witnesses in an ongoing treason trial involving Dr. Besigye, Obeid Lutale, and a UPDF officer.
The state alleges that the accused plotted to overthrow the government between 2023 and November 2024, with alleged meetings taking place in various international locations.
