Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe Commissions Low Yield Spring Water Project in Nyarutare Village
On April 15, 2025, Rt. Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, officially commissioned a low yield spring water project in Nyakatare village, located in Rubanga parish, Buyanja sub-county. This important initiative was developed by NKKD (North Kigezi Kinkiizi Dioceses) WatSan in partnership with the UK Support Group.
The project stemmed from a visit by an NKKD WatSan project surveyor who identified the dire need for safe and clean drinking water in the community. For years, residents relied on a pond for their water supply, which presented substantial health risks.
During the commissioning ceremony, Bishop Onesimus praised the collaborative spirit among various religious communities, particularly acknowledging a Catholic landowner who generously provided land for the construction of the spring.
Community Commitment and Financial Support
The project received robust support from the local community, which contributed essential materials, including stones, as well as a financial contribution of 1,080,000 Ugandan shillings. This amount was complemented by 7,890,000 shillings from the UK Support Group, showcasing a valuable partnership in community development.
Rev. Canon Eric Baingana, the NKKD WatSan project coordinator and Diocesan Secretary, expressed gratitude to Bishop Onesimus for his unwavering commitment to WatSan projects and to the community for their contributions.
Project Benefits and Addressing Health Concerns
The newly commissioned low yield spring features a daily flowing water pipe connected to a reservoir tank equipped with a tap, ensuring a reliable water supply even during dry seasons. This initiative is set to achieve significant outcomes:
- Prevent Water-Related Diseases: Aiming to decrease the prevalence of diseases such as typhoid.
- Promote Community Development: Enhancing living conditions and supporting the growth of the community.
Mr. Geoffrey Kyomukama, the LCV chairperson of Rukungiri District, acknowledged the fruitful collaboration between North Kigezi Diocese and the local government, emphasizing its vital role in community development programs.
Community Voices and Challenges Ahead
Mr. Agaba Rubondo, the LC3 chairperson of Buyanja Sub County, urged the community to take proactive steps to protect the new spring and water source. He warned against planting eucalyptus trees nearby, which could deplete the water supply.
Local residents, led by Rev. Canon Kamuhangire, expressed immense joy and relief at finally having access to safe and clean drinking water, a challenge they had faced for many years. Community members shared their hopes and excitement for the numerous benefits this project will bring to their lives.

The event was also graced by several dignitaries, including:
- Maama Gladys Magezi
