Commemorating World Wetland Day
The Ministry of Water and Environment has called upon the public to join in the collective responsibility of conserving wetlands in the country for future generations. In a bid to conserve the country's wetlands, the government has implemented policies to prevent degradation. This comes at a time where the country is set to commemorate the World Wetland Day on the 2nd February 2025.
In July 2024,the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) evicted families in different parts of the country with an aim of restoring wetlands in the country.
According to a report from the Ministry of Water and Environment, 8.9% of wetlands have been recovered compared to the already existing 9.3% intact wetland cover showing a slight improvement in wetland coverage. This was addressed today in a media engagement at the Uganda Media Centre.
In a bid to fight the degradation of the wetland areas, the government has put up various measures to ensure that wetlands in the country are restored for sustainable use.
Despite the government's effort to revive the wetlands, different activities have contributed to the traverse effects that lead to wetland degradation
Okurut emphasized the importance of wetlands and the crucial role they play in the country stating the impacts they have in the country's environment.
The public was called upon to join in the fight of wetland conservation.
The World Wetland day is set to be celebrated on the 2nd February 2025,under the theme ,"Conserving wetlands today for a secure future" under the year's slogan, 'Healthy wetlands, secured future' at Katerera grounds in Rubirizi District.
