Conservationists And Health Experts Forge Alliance To Tackle Population Growth Challenges In Kigezi Sub-Region
Conservationists and health experts in the Kigezi sub-region have initiated a pioneering collaboration aimed at integrating conservation endeavours with public health programs to address the issues brought about by a swiftly expanding population.
The landscapes of Kigezi and its surrounding areas have long been renowned for their rich biodiversity, boasting diverse flora and fauna that contribute to the region's ecological significance. However, with the population steadily increasing, concerns have escalated regarding the sustainable coexistence of human communities and natural habitats.
In response to the pressing environmental issues in the Kigezi sub-region, conservationists and health experts have joined forces to address the interconnected challenges of biodiversity conservation and public health. The collaboration was formally launched during a symposium attended by key stakeholders from the fields of conservation, healthcare, and community development.
Dr. Adalbert Ainomucunguzi, Regional Manager for East Africa at the International Crane Foundation (ICF), emphasized the urgent need for holistic approaches that consider both environmental and human health concerns.
One of the key focal areas of the partnership is the adoption of the Population, Health, and Environment (PHE) approach, which recognizes the interconnectedness of population dynamics, public health, and environmental sustainability.
Led by the International Crane Foundation in collaboration with Margaret Pyke Trust, Rugarama Hospital, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, this innovative strategy integrates healthcare access, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable living practices.
Justus Mwebembezi, Executive Director of the Rwenzori Centre for Research and Advocacy, emphasized the need for collaboration between conservation organizations, local communities, governments, and international partners to find innovative solutions that balance human population needs with environmental protection imperatives.
Damaris Kisha, Senior Field Officer for the International Crane Foundation and Endangered Wildlife Trust Kenya, underscored the urgency of the situation, noting that East Africa hosts some of the world's most diverse ecosystems and wildlife. She emphasized that the call to action is not only regional but global, as the consequences of uncontrolled population growth affect the interconnected web of life.
Leaders, including Ninsiima Evelyne Kikafunda, President of Green Environment Promotion (GEP), advocated for an integrated approach to Population, Health, and Environment, highlighting the importance of education in preventing early marriages and school dropouts to curb rapid population growth.
Uganda's population has increased by 7.1 million people from 2016 to 2021, rising from 38.75 million to 45.85 million. As conservationists sound the alarm over this demographic shift, there is hope that a united effort, driven by increased awareness, education, and the adoption of sustainable practices, can pave the way for a future where human activities and the diverse biodiversity of East Africa can coexist harmoniously.
