Farewell to Pope Francis: Vatican Announces Funeral Arrangements

Farewell to Pope Francis: Vatican Announces Funeral Arrangements

Date: April 22, 2025
Location: Vatican City

The Vatican has formally announced the arrangements for the farewell of Pope Francis, following the sad news of his passing. Earlier today, Cardinal Camerlengo Kevin Farrell confirmed that the late Jorge Mario Bergoglio, beloved by many, has died. A detailed plan for Pope Francis’ funeral has been set in motion.

Lying in State

Starting Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 11 a.m. local time, Pope Francis’ body will be transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica, where it will lie in state for the public to pay their respects. The coffin will make its way through Santa Marta Square and into the Basilica, allowing mourners to honor the late Pontiff in a solemn procession led by Cardinal Farrell.

Funeral Mass Details

The funeral Mass is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10 a.m. local time (09:00 BST, 08:00 GMT). Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the dean of the College of Cardinals, will preside over the service, joined by clergy from around the globe to symbolize the Church's unity in mourning.

The Mass will conclude with the traditional rites of “Ultima commendatio” and “Valedictio,” heralding a nine-day period of mourning and prayers for the repose of Pope Francis’ soul.

Image of Remembrance

In a poignant gesture, the Vatican has released an image of Pope Francis in an open coffin, dressed in a striking red robe, wearing a papal mitre, and holding a rosary in his hands. This image serves as a comforting reminder of his faith and dedication.

Next Steps for the Church

After the funeral, Pope Francis’ body will be laid to rest at the Basilica of St. Mary Major. Following this, preparations will begin to select his successor. The dean of the College of Cardinals has a window of 15 to 20 days to summon the cardinals to Rome for the sacred ritual known as the conclave, in which the next Pope will be chosen.

As we remember the legacy of Pope Francis, we invite everyone to keep the Church, its clergy, and the faithful around the world in our prayers during this time of loss.
