Kampala Implements Signalized Road Junctions to Ease Congestion and Improve Traffic Safety
Kampala, Uganda — In an effort to curb traffic jams and enhance road safety, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has adopted the installation of signalized junctions across the city, including measures such as traffic signals and yellow box junctions. This initiative aims to streamline traffic flow, reduce congestion, and mitigate road accidents in the densely populated urban areas.
According to KCCA spokesperson Daniel Nuweabine, the deployment of traffic signals at key junctions is a strategic move to improve traffic management. He explained that these signals are designed to regulate vehicle movement from different directions, minimizing collision risks and creating a safer travel environment for residents and commuters alike.
“Our goal is to reduce gridlock and make roads safer for everyone. We plan to extend the installation of traffic lights to other parts of Greater Kampala as part of our broader traffic management strategy,” Nuweabine stated.
In addition to traffic management improvements, KCCA is set to launch new road construction projects in Kawempe Division, with a Shs 26 billion allocation under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program. These roads are expected to enhance access, boost mobility, and stimulate economic activity in the suburb.
However, the authority also addressed concerns raised by taxi operators, who recently voiced frustrations over high license fees that have limited their operations. Nuweabine urged the public to adhere to licensing regulations while emphasizing the importance of compliance for sustained city development.
This multifaceted approach demonstrates Kampala's commitment to creating a safer, more efficient urban transportation network that supports economic growth and improves the quality of life for its residents.
