Locals In Danger Of Contracting Diseases After Delayed Garbage Recycling Plans

Gulu City has kick-started the construction of a garbage processing plant to give hope to residents who have been affected by the pilled garbage in the city

The plant had been abandoned after the contractor abandoned the works due to insufficient funds, the project is expected to be completed in 8 months’ time.
The improper disposal of garbage in the final collections point in Agwee Ward Pece-laroo division of Gulu city is imposing fear on locals residing in the neighborhood, particularly on their health.

The delayed completion of a modern garbage recycling plan funded by KFW bank stalled at 40 percent leading to improper disposal of the waste in the area leaving heaps of rotting garbage forcing authorities to sometimes burn the compiled cabbage polluting the air.
At about 9 am we rode to the final garbage collection point of all garbage from Gulu city measuring approximately 7 hectares located in Agwee ward along the Pece stream, approximately 3 kilometers from the heart of the city.

Upon arrival at the land field, one is  welcomed by swamps of files and bad odor from the compilation of unsorted garbage and stagnant dirty water that has been in the land field for some time
Ojok Stephen is a resident of boke forest ward Gulu City, He resides 50 meters from the land hosting a garbage collection point.
Ojok says the poor garbage disposal has not left his family the same. He says they live in fear as they are likely to contract diseases at any time.
His experience is not much different from Francis’ who told us that he has lost huge amounts of money in treating family members. Most of the sickness that has affected his family is attributed to poor garbage disposal.

Gulu City health inspector Lubanga Micheal explains that both Francis and Stephen are indeed in danger of diseases for as long as there’s continued poor garbage disposal. Their hope lies in the newly planned garbage recycling plant. This is expected to ease disposal and poor sanitation
The proposed recycling plant has a capacity of 188,079-meter cubes of waste processing per day. This includes sorting waste, purifying water from the waste, and recycling plastic.

The construction of this plant has stalled at 40 percent as the first constructors abandoned sites due to inadequate funds.
This has now been awarded to new contractors, ACEC Uganda/Kenya Limited for the completion of the project

The plant will cost up to a tune of 4.7 billion with a completion period of 8 months.
