Mathias Mpuuga Unveils New Political Party, Democratic Front, Renamed from Green Partisan Party
On March 28th, 2025, the political landscape in Uganda witnessed a significant development as Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, the National Coordinator of the Democratic Alliance (DA), officially unveiled a new political formation called the Democratic Front. The rebranding follows the former Green Partisan Party, emphasizing a fresh direction within Uganda's opposition movement.
During the launch at their offices in Namirembe, Kampala, Mpuuga commended the efforts of those behind the new party and assured that this transition would not weaken the broader Democratic Alliance, which continues to serve as an umbrella for various opposition forces. He emphasized that the new party was formed in strict accordance with legal guidelines and aims to foster unity among opposition groups to challenge President Museveni’s nearly four-decade rule.
The unveiling comes amid political tensions, notably after Bobi Wine, the President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), suspended Mpuuga from his role as Vice President for the Central Region, citing allegations of corruption involving UGX 500 million. Despite this, Mpuuga remains committed to uniting opposition efforts, emphasizing that unity is essential for defeating the ruling NRM in upcoming elections.
He also downplayed President Museveni’s recent apology to Ugandans and the Kingdom of Buganda, calling for clearer, unequivocal gestures that genuinely address national issues. The Democratic Front becomes the 28th registered political party in Uganda, joining others like NRM, NUP, FDC, DP, and UPC, among many.
The emergence of this new party signifies ongoing political mobilization ahead of Uganda’s next electoral cycle, as opposition leaders seek to forge a cohesive front against longstanding ruling authorities.
