Ministry Of Health, Malaria Consortium Unveil New Malaria Prevention Remedies

The Ministry of Health, in partnership with the Malaria Consortium, has launched smart home remedies to fight the high malaria burden in Nwoya District, Northern Uganda

Nwoya is one of the malaria-endemic districts in the country.

The Household Campaign Against Malaria (HOCAM) Project is aimed at empowering members of the household to take personal initiative to prevent the spread of malaria in homes by using local remedies.

Some of the home remedies to ensure that members of a household don’t contract malaria include keeping the home smart and neat by slashing bushes and clearing stagnant water which is breeding grounds for mosquitoes that spread malaria and sleeping under a mosquito net.

The program has been rolled out in the Sub-counties with the highest cases of malaria as recorded in different health centers in Purongo, Got-apwoyo, Lungulu, and Alero, among others.

The program is also aimed at empowering village health team members to monitor and report malaria cases in a timely manner. The health ministry believes that this initiative that will be rolled out to other parts of the county will see a Malaria-free Uganda by 2030.

Francis Abwaimo, the Project Director of the Malaria Consortium explained why the Household Campaign Against Malaria (HOCAM) Project will play a vital role in the prosperity and transformation of individual households in Uganda.
