Museveni Hails Veterans as Uganda Marks 37th Heroes’ Day: President Links National Progress to Liberation Struggle. Leaders Call for Patriotism, Wealth Creation and Anti-Corruption Efforts.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has paid tribute to Uganda’s liberation veterans, crediting them for the sacrifices that laid the foundation for the country’s peace, stability, and development. As Uganda marked the 37th National Heroes’ Day, leaders called on citizens to safeguard the gains achieved through sacrifice and actively participate in wealth creation and national transformation.
Uganda marked the 37th National Heroes’ Day with celebrations held at State House Nakasero, where President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni led the nation in honouring individuals who contributed to the country's liberation and development.
The annual commemoration recognizes the sacrifices made by men and women whose efforts helped shape Uganda’s journey toward peace, stability, and progress.
In his address, President Museveni credited veterans of the liberation struggle for the National Resistance Movement's victory in 1986, noting that their commitment and sacrifice enabled the movement to overcome a better-equipped government army.
He said the gains Uganda enjoys today are rooted in the NRM's founding principles of democracy, security, national unity, and service delivery.
The President also urged Ugandans to embrace government wealth-creation programs and take advantage of available opportunities to improve household incomes and contribute to national development.
Museveni further linked his leadership philosophy to Christian values, saying leadership should focus on improving the well-being of others and creating opportunities that uplift communities.
Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Luwero Triangle and Rwenzori Region, Alice Kaboyo, highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of war veterans and their families.
She revealed that government has already constructed sixteen low-cost houses for vulnerable civilian veterans and continues to pursue partnerships aimed at addressing their social and economic needs.
Kaboyo noted that despite resource constraints, her office remains committed to ensuring that veterans receive the support and recognition they deserve.
The National Chairman of the Luwero Triangle War Veterans Association, Hajji Edrisa Ssedunga, called for stronger anti-corruption campaigns across the country.
He emphasized the need to instill values of integrity and accountability among young people through the education system.
Ssedunga said fighting corruption is essential for protecting the achievements made through years of sacrifice and ensuring sustainable national development.
As Uganda commemorates the 37th National Heroes’ Day, leaders have renewed calls for patriotism, unity, and responsible citizenship, emphasizing that honoring the nation's heroes requires a collective commitment to protecting peace, fighting corruption, and advancing socio-economic transformation.
