Prayer for Letting Go of What Is Weighing You Down
The Prayer
Lord, our backpacks are heavy — sometimes too heavy to bear. We long to walk in freedom from our past, from challenging circumstances, and from the weight we carry every day.
Remind us to leave these rocks at the foot of the cross instead of placing them back into our backpacks each morning. Give us the strength and endurance not to pick them back up, but to continually surrender them to You.
We choose to believe that You are a God of restoration and peace. We choose to believe that You can take the ugly parts of our lives and the regretful parts of our past and make them into something beautiful.
We open our hearts to You, Lord. We invite You into the deepest and darkest parts of our souls — the places that hold bitterness, resentment, regret, shame, disappointment, and grief — and we ask that You replace them with Your peace. A peace that surpasses all understanding.
We long to walk in freedom, and we know that it is possible because of the sacrifice of Your Son. We believe that because of what Jesus has done, we can live free from the weight we so often choose to carry.
We know this will be a process of letting go, so please give us the endurance and trust we need to fully surrender, to release it all, and to walk in the freedom that only You can give.
In Your precious name I pray,
Amen.
A Reflection on Surrender
There is a quiet courage in admitting that we were never meant to carry everything alone. The image of a backpack filled with rocks is one many of us know intimately — each stone a worry, a regret, an old wound, a grudge we've polished smooth by holding it too long.
The invitation of this prayer is not to pretend the rocks don't exist. It is to walk to the cross, bend down, and set them down. And then — this is the hardest part — to walk away without picking them back up. Surrender is rarely a single moment; it is a thousand small choices, made over and over, until one day we realize our hands are finally open.
What rock are you holding today? The cross is close enough to reach.
