Skill Mismatch A Cause For Poor Work Culture

Skill Mismatch A Cause For Poor Work Culture

Director at Platform for Labor Action, Lydia Bwiite, has explained that having under-educated employees affects the productivity expected to achieve at the job.

The employment industry continues to see a number of workers being employed based on “gamba nogu” other than actual academic qualifications

This comes at the back of similar comments by the State Minister for Labour, Col. (RtD)Charles Engola Okello who also expressed his dissatisfaction with Uganda having a poor work culture and ethics.

Last week, the state minister for Labour, Employment, and Industrial relations, Col. (Rtd) Charles Engola Okello revealed that the scarce employment opportunities and under-utilization of the youth in the labor market in Uganda are due to the poor work culture and ethics.

The Programs Director at Platform for Labor Action, Lydia Bwiite, explained that 43% of the working population in Uganda has underqualified workers.

She attributed the education mismatch among employees to be the cause of poor work culture and ethics.

Bwiite urged employers and employees to know their rights and responsibilities to promote a positive work environment.

Workers MP, Hon. Byakatonda Abdul highlighted discussions as a way of resolving human resource development issues.

Today, 1st May 2023, Uganda joins workers worldwide to commemorate International Labor Day.

This year’s theme is “Promoting Positive Work Culture and Ethics: A Prerequisite for Increased Investment, Employment Opportunities, and Household Incomes.”

The ceremony has been held in the Namutumba district.
