Uganda Gears Up for CHAN 2024: Public Called to Embrace the Continental Tournament

Uganda is in the final stages of preparations to host the highly anticipated 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), scheduled to start next month at the newly renovated Mandela National Stadium in Namboole. This event marks a historic milestone for Uganda’s sports industry, reaffirming the country's emerging status as a key host for major continental tournaments.

During a briefing at the Uganda Media Centre, Dennis Mugimba, Chairperson of the CHAN Uganda Local Organizing Committee (LOC), provided a comprehensive update on the preparations. Mugimba assured that the government has invested significantly to ensure a successful tournament, emphasizing that no additional funding is being requested from public sources.

Mark Namanya, Communications Manager at the AFCON Secretariat, appealed to Ugandans to actively support the event. He highlighted that public participation would help create a lasting legacy for future generations.
Ahmed Hussen, the media coordinator for the AFCON, announced that media coverage will be restricted to accredited media personnel only. He urged all media houses to register and participate actively in covering the event.

In addition to CHAN 2024, Uganda is set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Kenya and Tanzania. This will be Uganda’s first time hosting the main AFCON tournament, following the postponement of the 2024 edition, which was initially planned to be co-hosted with Kenya and Tanzania. Notably, CHAN is dedicated exclusively to players participating in their home country’s leagues, setting it apart from AFCON.

As Uganda prepares to welcome Africa’s finest football talent, the call for national support grows louder — the success of CHAN 2024 depends on every Ugandan’s embrace of this exciting event.
