Uganda Railways Revives Jinja Freight Services: BIDCO Receives 633 Metric Tons of Cargo by Rail from Mombasa. Rail Transport Expected to Cut Costs and Reduce Road Damage.

The Uganda Railways Corporation has intensified efforts to improve cargo transportation by rehabilitating railway lines connecting major factories and industrial facilities. The latest development has seen the successful delivery of 633 metric tons of cargo to BIDCO Uganda Limited in Jinja, marking a significant milestone in the revival of freight services along the eastern corridor.

As part of efforts to improve Uganda's import and export logistics, the Uganda Railways Corporation has continued rehabilitating railway infrastructure linking key manufacturing plants and industrial hubs.

The move is aimed at providing a reliable, cost-effective, and efficient alternative for transporting goods within Uganda and across the region.

After nearly eight years without rail cargo deliveries to the facility, Uganda Railways successfully transported 633 metric tons of cargo from the Port of Mombasa in Kenya to BIDCO Uganda Limited in Jinja.

The delivery is being viewed as a major step in restoring confidence in rail freight services and strengthening Uganda's industrial supply chain.

Speaking during the delivery, Uganda Railways Corporation spokesperson John Ssengendo highlighted the benefits of rail transport, including lower transportation costs, improved efficiency, and reduced pressure on the country's road network.

He said the corporation remains committed to rehabilitating and modernizing railway infrastructure to support trade and industrial growth.

Ssengendo noted that increased use of rail transport will also help the government reduce expenditure on road maintenance, which has been driven largely by damage caused by heavy cargo trucks.

The Head of Transportation at BIDCO Uganda Limited, Agrey Manala, welcomed the development, describing it as a significant boost to the company's operations.

He commended government and Uganda Railways Corporation for improving the railway network and restoring freight services to the factory.

Manala also praised the corporation for ensuring the cargo arrived safely and on schedule, noting that the reliability of rail transport will help improve operational efficiency and reduce logistics costs.

He added that increased use of the railway network is expected to enhance productivity, improve competitiveness, and boost profitability for manufacturers that depend on large-scale cargo transportation.

Officials say the continued rehabilitation of railway lines is expected to strengthen regional trade, support industrialization, and contribute to Uganda's broader economic transformation agenda.
