New six-month HIV prevention injection lands in Uganda

Uganda’s HIV prevention programme has received a major reinforcement following the arrival of an initial batch of 19,200 doses of Lenacapavir, a long-acting preventive medication supplied through support from the Global Fund. The drug, which is administered twice a year, is expected to expand prevention options for individuals at heightened risk of HIV infection.

Health authorities indicate that the medication will be prioritized for districts with consistently high HIV incidence and prevalence rates, aligning distribution with areas that require the most targeted interventions. The rollout, scheduled to commence in March 2026, is part of a broader effort to reduce new infections through innovative and patient-friendly prevention methods.

Unlike daily oral preventive regimens, the six-month dosing schedule offers a more convenient alternative, potentially improving adherence among vulnerable populations such as key risk groups and individuals with limited access to routine healthcare services. Public health experts note that long-acting prevention tools can play a critical role in bridging gaps in uptake and sustaining protection over time.

The introduction of Lenacapavir brings a shift toward diversified prevention strategies within Uganda’s HIV response framework. By integrating long-acting biomedical solutions alongside existing prevention measures, the country aims to accelerate progress toward lowering transmission rates and achieving national and global HIV control targets.

Officials emphasize that targeted deployment, community sensitization, and consistent monitoring will be central to ensuring the drug’s impact, particularly in high-burden settings where prevention efforts remain a public health priority.
