Visually Impaired People Should Embrace Technology

The Visually Impaired people under their Association the Rwenzori Association of visually impaired have called for support in embracing technology so that they can get through modern times run on technology.

Led by their chairperson, Asiimwe Richard, they argue that most of them are pushed out of the production process after losing sight.

This has in the end left them out from benefitting from the different opportunities including technology.

According to Richard Asiimwe, visually impaired people are at risk of losing out on many opportunities once they lose sight.

He says if helped in embracing technology this will be dealt with so that they also add something to the growth of the country.

The National Health Medical Information system report data collected between October 2020 and October 2021 indicates that Busoga Sub-region has the highest number of visually impaired people.

The magnitude of visual impairment in the region stands at 13 percent compared to 4.6 percent in other areas.

The Ophthalmology Society of Uganda also indicates that more than 400,000 people in Uganda have visual impairment because of treatable and preventable conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.

Currently, some of the members of this association are getting computer training at the Bridge Institute of Technology in Fort Portal.

However, the institute says it does not have enough resources to cater to the needs of the visually impaired people in embracing technology.

The Association said this during the meeting held with MTN Uganda in Fort Portal as they launched their new campaign dubbed the MTN Uganda Together We Are Unstoppable campaign.

The campaign is aimed at creating the stage for Ugandans to shine brighter in their different hustles.

The Fort Portal Central division Member of Parliament Alex Ruhunda was appointed by the telecom giant as its Chief Community Officer who will be MTNs eyes and ears in the region and maximize interactions to better understand the needs and aspirations of the respective communities.

Sen Somdev, the MTN Chief Marketing Officer says MTN will find all means to support the Association in embracing Technology.
