Kenya Elections 2022: The Court Battle Begins
Thousands of supporters of presidential candidate and runner-up in the just ended Kenya Election 2022, Raila Amollo Odinga have today filled the streets surrounding the Supreme Court of Kenya ahead of the anticipated filling of his petition against the presidential elections results.
The Azimio la Umoja-Kenya One alliance leader this Monday afternoon to file his petition against the declaration of William Samoei Ruto by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission of Kenya.
Among the issues, Raila cites lack of transparency in the election declaration process, which claim was given credence by the four commissioners of IEBC who stormed out of the national tally centre saying they could no longer be part of the declaration.
Kenyans will from today and for the next 14 days, await the outcome of the petition which is due to be heard by the seven judges of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Koome and Chief Justice William Ouko until September 5th, 2022 as provided for in the constitution.
IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati is the first respondent, joined with the Commission and Dr. Ruto.
Reports also show that Odinga has been joined in the petition by the dissenting commissioners; Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi, Irene Masit and Justus Nyang’aya who disowned the results, as interested parties.
Former Director of Public Prosecutions Phillip Murgor, Pheroze Nowrojee, a seasoned constitutional and human rights lawyer, and James Orengo, the Siaya governor-elect are the top counsels for Odinga, while the Kenya Kwanza Alliance’s Dr. Ruto has Uhuru Kenyatta’s former lawyer Fred Ngatia and Ahmednassir Abdullahi as the lead counsels.
