Church of Uganda Partners with Post Bank Uganda to Launch Retirement Fund Supporting Retired Clergy

The Church of Uganda took a significant step toward caring for its retired clergy, bishops, and lay ministers by launching the Church of Uganda Retirement Fund initiative in partnership with Post Bank Uganda. The announcement was made during a breakfast meeting held at the Provincial Secretariat in Namirembe, where church leaders and representatives from Post Bank gathered to discuss ways to establish a sustainable pension scheme for those who have dedicated their lives to serving the church.

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, expressed deep concern about the welfare of those who have faithfully served the church for decades yet retire without reliable income support. “It is heartbreaking that many of our clergy and ministers, after serving with honor and devotion, retire into poverty and neglect,” he said. “We cannot allow this to continue. It is our moral responsibility as a Church to ensure they retire with dignity and the support they deserve.”

He emphasized the urgency of the initiative, urging Christian communities and development partners to join hands in supporting this noble cause. The Archbishop also called on insurance companies and policymakers to advocate for reforms that make insurance services more accessible to the elderly.

During the event, Rev. Canon Prof. John Kitahimbwa, Vice-Chancellor of Uganda Christian University, highlighted the scheme’s scope—initially targeting retired bishops and provincial secretaries, starting with Kampala Diocese and later expanding to other dioceses. He expressed optimism about the scheme’s positive impact and the need for swift implementation.

Representatives from Post Bank Uganda announced their commitment to support the initiative, pledging seed capital and ongoing support to ensure the fund’s success.

The event was attended by various dignitaries from the Church of Uganda, Post Bank Uganda, and other stakeholders, all committed to ensuring that retired church leaders are supported in their golden years.
