Empowering Church Leaders for Safe Motherhood and HIV Awareness in Ruwenzori Diocese
A team from Uganda Christian University (UCU), led by Rev. Dr. Richard Mulindwa, has partnered with the Ruwenzori Diocese to organize and execute a three-day conference aimed at equipping over 800 lay readers, catechists, and their spouses.
This conference took place at Kyebambe Girls School in Fort Portal from May 21 to 23, 2025. It involved discussions directed towards addressing critical community challenges, with a particular focus on HIV prevention and care, including safe motherhood, entrepreneurship, and family life.
The conference was characterized by activities such as HIV counseling and testing, family life education, entrepreneurship skills development, and practical training on health and community service. The goal was to build capacity among church leaders so that they can better advocate for the health and spiritual well-being of their communities.
During the conference, Dr. Mushin Nsubuga, the Executive Director of Save the Mothers East Africa, a project within UCU, urged participants to be strong advocates for safe motherhood, highlighting their important role at the grassroots level. While Mrs. Comfort Tumuhamye, Head, Undergraduate Studies, School of Business, UCU, inspired attendees to adopt a culture of saving and financial discipline as a foundation for a better life.
The Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Reuben Kisembo Amooti, expressed deep appreciation for UCU’s ongoing partnership and support. He commended the university for its commitment to strengthening the church’s mission through education, health, and community transformation.
