KCCA Seeks About 800bn To Work On Kampala Drainage Systems

The minister of state for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Kyofatogabye Kabuye, has revealed that Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) needs at least shs.800bn to fund works on drainage systems across the city in order to get rid of the country of the floods that have continued to affect the day-to-day activities of Ugandans during the rainy season.

This was while the authority presented its FY 2025/26 budget estimates to the Parliamentary Physical Infrastructure Committee.

Officials from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), led by the minister of state for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Kabuye Kyofatogabye, today presented the authority’s FY 2025/26 budget estimates to Parliament's Physical Infrastructure Committee, chaired by Hon. Dan Atwijukire Kimosho.

Amid the current flooding situation affecting the country, committee members challenged the physical infrastructure plan that the authority uses to approve construction projects in the country, citing poor drainage systems that have resulted in flooding during the heavy rains.

Minister Kabuye, in response, mentioned that KCCA needs about 800 BN to work on all drainage systems in Kampala City, however, expressing welcome to at least 26 BN to begin the works in order to ensure flood control.

Meanwhile, eight months down the road after the tragic collapse of the Kiteezi landfill, the minister noted that they have received funding of $1M to avert the landfill as they come up with measures to scientifically decap and cap the land.

He also mentioned that at least 101 affected persons are yet to be compensated.

Despite the call for more funding, the authority is yet to explain the non-utilization of the shs. 1.8bn released to the Directorate for the Greater Kampala metropolitan area three months ago, 2% of the approved 88bn budget.
