New Bishops; Chancellor Speaks Out On The Process

The two-day conference of the House of Bishops of the Province of the Church of Uganda House has ended today following the election yesterday of New Bishops in the Dioceses of North Karamoja, North Kigezi and Mukono.

During the conference held at the Lweza Training and Conference Centre in Wakiso District, the House of Bishops, comprising Bishops from across the Province, deliberated on a number of issues for the development of the Province of the Church of Uganda.

In the aftermath of the announcement of new bishops elect in North Karamoja, North Kigezi and Mukono Dioceses, news of the decision of the House of Bishops elects has been received with a lot of excitement.

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, His Grace Dr. Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu yesterday made a pronouncement communicating the decision from the House of Bishops sitting in Lweza Training and Conference Centre in Wakiso District.

At the end of this special sitting of the House of Bishops, the Provincial Chancellor Naboth Muhairwe spoke to COU Family TV and revealed the procedure that the church of Uganda undertook to ensure a fair process to acquire successors to the retiring Bishops.

He further elaborated that the process provides an articulate procedure to ensure a smooth outcome.

In the Province of the Church of Uganda, Church Canons provide that the Diocesan Synod selects the nomination committee that nominates two names of qualified priests in the diocese to the province where the house of bishops choose the bishop elect.

The retiring Bishops shared with us the work ahead for the the Bishops Elect and what it meant to them to retire from serving their flock.

The bishops elect are Rev Can. Simon Akol Aisu (North Karamoja), Rev Onesmus Asiimwe (North Kigezi), and Rev Can Enos Kitto Kagodo (Mukono).

Rev Can Aisu, the Sub-Dean of Christ Church Cathedral in Kotido, will replace retiring Bishop James Nasak as the fifth bishop of North Karamoja, and will be consecrated on February 12.

Rev Asiimwe will replace the late Bishop Benon Magezi who succumbed to Covid-19. He will be consecrated on March 12.

On the election of Rev. Can. Onesmus Asiimwe, Emeritus Bishop Patrick Tugume said Christians in North Kigezi Diocese were excited to have him as the 6th Bishop.

He said he had played his caretaker role to reconcile Christians in the diocese and hopefully the new bishop will take it from there.
