Urgent Action Needed: Women with Disabilities Face Harassment in Busia
Press Report by Ritah
During a recent belated celebration of International Women's Day at Madibira Primary School in Busia town, a group of women with disabilities shared alarming accounts of sexual harassment they have faced. These women reported that men posing as helpers at the Busia border have been preying on them, particularly during evening hours as they transport goods between Busia, Kenya, and Busia, Uganda.
The women recounted heart-wrenching experiences of being exploited while seeking assistance with their wheelchairs. Many alleged that these supposed helpers have led them into secluded areas where they faced harassment, prompting a call for urgent government intervention.
Addressing the gathering during the celebration, Asumin Abdallah, Chairperson of Women with Disabilities in Busia, voiced concerns about the heightened risk of HIV/AIDS and other health issues due to these incidents. She urged security and police authorities to give special attention to their reports to ensure their safety.
Hellen Adoa, the Minister of State for Fisheries and a prominent advocate for women's rights, condemned these acts of violence. She encouraged all disabled individuals to register with cross-border trader associations to strengthen their advocacy and support networks. Adoa also emphasized the importance of mutual respect in relationships to reduce domestic violence.
Additionally, Mangeni Sam Okumu, Mayor of Masafu Town Council, showed his support by donating half an acre of land to help women involved in cross-border trade enhance their incomes through sustainable projects.
According to data from the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, 64% of women living with disabilities in Uganda have reported experiencing sexual, emotional, or physical abuse from intimate partners, while 35% have faced sexual violence.
The urgent need for effective measures and government support to tackle harassment against women with disabilities in Uganda is clearer than ever.
