Archbishop Kaziimba hands over IRCU Chairmanship
23rd June 2026: The Archbishop of Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu has today officially handed over the chairmanship of the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) to Rt. Rev. Dr. Anthony Zziwa, the Bishop of Kiyinda–Mityana Diocese.
Bishop Zziwa also serves as the President of the Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC), an umbrella body that brings together the Catholic Bishops of Uganda.
During Archbishop Kaziimba's tenure as Chairperson of IRCU, the Council strengthened interfaith dialogue, peacebuilding, and national advocacy.
He led the Council of Presidents in engaging the government on post-election reconciliation and national unity. Most recently, the Council has been actively engaging H.E. the President and the Chief of Defense Forces on the release of Hon. Erias Lukwago and other political prisoners.
Archbishop Kaziimba was enthroned as the archbishop of the Church of Uganda on 1st March 2020 at St. Paul's Cathedral, Namirembe, and is scheduled to retire on 15th August 2027.
