Church of Uganda Backs Postponement of 2026 Uganda Martyrs Day Celebrations Over Ebola Concerns

The Church of Uganda has officially announced the postponement of the 2026 Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations that had been scheduled for 3rd June at Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, citing public health concerns linked to the Ebola outbreak reported in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In a statement released on 18th May 2026, the Church said the decision followed guidance issued by H.E. the president of the Republic of Uganda and consultations with the government of Uganda, national epidemic response authorities, and religious leaders.

The Church emphasized that while Uganda Martyrs Day remains one of the most important events on the Christian calendar, safeguarding lives and public health must take priority.

Rev. Canon William Ongeng, the Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda, said the Church fully supports the government's directive and urged Christians, pilgrims, dioceses, and organizing committees across the country to cooperate with the new measures.

Believers who had already begun preparations or travel plans to Namugongo have been encouraged to remain calm, observe all health and safety guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health, and continue praying for Uganda and affected communities.

The Church also commended Uganda Christian University, which had been entrusted with organizing this year’s Anglican Martyrs Day celebrations. The statement recognized the tremendous effort, resources, and commitment already invested by the university leadership, organizing committees, volunteers, partners, and stakeholders.

Church leaders further assured Christians that they will continue engaging Government and health authorities regarding possible alternative arrangements through which the Uganda Martyrs commemorations may proceed safely and responsibly.

The Church of Uganda also appreciated the continued efforts of Government agencies, health workers, and security teams working to protect the nation during this period.

“May God protect Uganda and grant healing to all affected communities,” the statement concluded.
