Reaching Beyond the Walls: How the Church Can Thrive in a Digital and Cultural Era
REACHING BEYOND THE WALLS
For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea Habakkuk 2:14
THURSDAY, 22 May 2025, Kampala, St. Stephen's Kitara COU- In a compelling presentation during the Diocese of Kampala Diocesan business meeting, Rev. Eng. Dr. Emmanuel Mwesigwa challenged members to reimagine the mission of the Church beyond its traditional four walls.
Speaking under the theme Reaching the Church Beyond the Building Rev. Mwesigwa delivered both a practical blueprint for navigating ministry in an age of cultural shifts and digital transformation.
Quoting Ephesians 4:11–12 and Habakkuk’s prophetic vision, he reminded ministers that the Church (Ekklesia) is not confined to buildings, but is a living, mobile body called to reach people wherever they are.
Rev. Mwesigwa highlighted the urgent need for clergy to understand today’s complex ministry environment, a world marked by cultural convergence, rapid technological advancement, and ever-evolving communication methods. “While the world changes, the spiritual and emotional needs of individuals and communities remain deeply rooted and it is there we must meet them.” he noted.
Referencing Ralph Winter, he introduced four mission mechanisms through which the gospel has historically moved: voluntary going, involuntary going, voluntary coming, and involuntary coming. “We are witnessing all four today, through migration, online engagement, and even through crisis. We must discern where God is moving and go there with intention.” He said.
One of the central challenges Rev. Mwesigwa raised was how to cultivate depth in ministry outside traditional models. He called for an expansive concept of community, urging ministers to study their local demographics, listen to their people, and respond with love rather than judgment. Quoting the ordination vows, he reminded ministers that they are called to be servants and shepherds, watchmen and stewards not just in sanctuaries but in the wilderness of this world’s temptations.
Turning to the power of online ministry, Rev. Mwesigwa shared some data from some of our churches showcasing how YouTube and other social platforms have become powerful channels of evangelism. Yet he cautioned against unstructured engagement: Online ministry requires training, clear structures, and a learning mindset. Otherwise, we risk misrepresentation and confusion
In a bold and refreshing perspective, he also encouraged ministers to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset. Ministry today must include engagement in schools, businesses, chaplaincies, and the marketplace he said. He pointed out the value of strategic partnerships, financial stewardship through, Banks and SACCOs.
Rev. Mwesigwa’s message was a timely reminder that the Church must evolve without losing its mission. We are called to resist evil, support the weak, defend the poor, and tell the story of God’s love wherever people are, not just where pews are he concluded.
