Ura Trains Journalists to Demystify Taxes, Boost Public Compliance: Public Urged to Verify Tin Status and Seek Guidance. Media Engagement Seen as Key to Bridging Tax Knowledge Gap
In a bid to strengthen public trust and improve tax compliance, the Uganda Revenue Authority has turned to the media, training parliamentary journalists to better interpret and communicate taxation systems, while urging citizens to verify their Tax Identification Numbers for accountability.
The Uganda Revenue Authority conducted a tax education session for members of the Uganda Parliamentary Press Association, equipping them with knowledge on tax collection, management, enforcement mechanisms, and trade facilitation.
URA spokesperson Robert Kalumba emphasised the importance of the training, noting it is a crucial step in helping journalists—and by extension the public—better understand how taxation systems operate, ultimately improving compliance.
He also addressed concerns raised by journalists regarding misconceptions in the tax system, stating that many of these issues have already been resolved.
Another key issue discussed was the management of Tax Identification Numbers (TINs), particularly among entrepreneurs who may be taxed despite inactive businesses. The public has been urged to verify their TIN status and seek clarification where necessary.
The session not only empowered journalists with deeper insights into taxation but also reinforced the media’s role in simplifying complex tax matters for the ordinary citizen. URA says it plans to roll out more such trainings to bridge the knowledge gap and enhance nationwide tax awareness.
