Voter Registration Gains Momentum in Kabale: Residents Call for Better Pay for LC1 Chairpersons. Grassroots Leaders Say Improved Facilitation Will Boost Service Delivery.
As the nationwide voter registration exercise for the forthcoming Local Council I (LC1) and Local Council II (LC2) elections gathers momentum, residents of Kabale District are calling on government to increase the monthly allowance for LC1 chairpersons, saying better facilitation is essential to strengthen grassroots leadership and improve service delivery. The appeal comes as voter registration records an encouraging turnout across the district.
The ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise for the forthcoming Local Council I and Local Council II elections has recorded an encouraging turnout across Kabale District, with residents turning up in large numbers to register ahead of the grassroots polls.
According to the Kabale District Electoral Officer, Aisha Nansubuga, the registration exercise is progressing smoothly across all the district's 728 villages, reflecting growing public appreciation of the importance of grassroots leadership and participation in the democratic process.
Nansubuga said the Electoral Commission has finalized all the necessary logistical arrangements to ensure the remaining registration exercise and the forthcoming LC1 and LC2 elections are conducted in a free, transparent, peaceful, and credible manner.
Despite the positive turnout, residents have renewed calls on government to increase the monthly allowance for LC1 chairpersons, arguing that the current facilitation of ten thousand shillings is inadequate for leaders who provide essential services at the community level.
They say improving the welfare of LC1 chairpersons will strengthen grassroots governance and enhance service delivery.
