UNATA Leadership Addresses Goods Clearance Delays and High Customs Charges at Entebbe Airport

In a significant development, the leadership of the Uganda National Traders’ Alliance (UNATA) recently held a crucial meeting with airport transporters to discuss rising frustrations among traders importing goods through Entebbe International Airport. The meeting focused on the alarming delays and increased costs that are severely impacting the import process and overall trade in the country.

Many transporters revealed that they have scaled back or stopped their usual operations at the airport due to the prolonged clearance times and administrative bottlenecks. This disruption poses a serious threat to trade efficiency and highlights the urgent need for government intervention.

During the discussion, UNATA officials, including Chairman Godfrey Katongole and Executive Director Kwebihha Muzamil Abwooli, emphasized the critical importance of timely and transparent customs procedures. They urged the government to step in and address these issues, especially as the country prepares for the upcoming financial year budget review scheduled for this Thursday.

Transporters have also pointed out the issue of exorbitant customs charges, which many find difficult to bear. Several traders have complained about encounters with unofficial URA agents—often referred to as imposters—who request money at the airport, further complicating clearance processes. Traders have called on the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to intervene swiftly before these practices escalate.

Esuru Francis, chairperson of traders in Soroti, highlighted the communication breakdown between officials and transporters. "The airport authorities have failed to provide clear explanations regarding the delays," he said. "Some goods remain stuck for up to two months, creating financial strain for traders."

As the government prepares for the upcoming budget, there is mounting pressure from the business community for urgent reforms to streamline customs processes, eliminate unnecessary charges, and crack down on corrupt practices. The traders and transporters are hopeful that concrete actions will be taken to restore confidence in Uganda’s trade environment.
